The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) gained ground in numerous specialty categories and is once again ranked among the nation’s top-rated hospitals, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2012-13 “Best Hospitals” rankings.

UMMC’s cancer specialty shot up 11 spots to No.11 in 2012-13, up from No.22 last year. The diabetes and endocrinology specialties rose 16 places to No.11 in 2012-13, up from No.29 last year. The nephrology specialty, which includes UMMC’s well known kidney transplant program, rose 18 spots up to No.9 in 2012-13 from No.27 last year. Urology specialty jumped 29 places up to No.15 in 2012-13 from No.44 last year. Top-50 designations were earned in a total of nine specialties. Other strides came in cardiology and heart surgery specialties, which moved up four spots to No.27. The ear, nose and throat specialty moved up 14 spots to No.24. The gynecology (No.49) and neurology and neurosurgery (No.48) specialties both made the top 50, and the pulmonary specialty is ranked No.26. While not ranked in the top 50, UMMC is also recognized by the magazine as high-performing in gastroenterology, geriatrics, and orthopedics specialties.
