University of Maryland ranks in top 100 globally – Washington Business Journal

The University of Maryland, College Park has cracked the top 100 global reputation ranking by a publication based in the United Kingdom, The Washington Post reported.

Times Higher Education shows that UMd. is in a group ranked 91-100, in a class with Monash University in Australia, Lund in Sweden, Bristol in the U.K., the Free University of Berlin and Texas A&M. The rankings were based on surveys of academics around the world. Johns Hopkins, in Baltimore, ranked No. 19, the highest from the local region. Harvard University was ranked No. 1.

William “Bill” Enright joined Vaxin in June 2008 and currently serves as a Director, President & CEO. Prior to joining Vaxin, Mr. Enright spent six years with GenVec, Inc. with increasing responsibilities including the Head of Business Development. Mr. Enright was responsible for helping to build GenVec’s vaccine business including approximately $140M of funding for vaccine related initiatives and moving four vaccines into clinical development. Mr. Enright brings more than 23 years of experience in a variety of positions within the life science/biotech industry, including time as a consultant, a bench scientist and 12 years with Life Technologies, Corp. (previously Invitrogen), working in various senior level licensing, business management, manufacturing and research roles. Mr. Enright received a Master of Arts in Molecular Biology from SUNY at Buffalo and a Master of Science in Business Management from Johns Hopkins University.

Previously he was the University’s director of state and federal relations in the President’s Office, and served in the legal counsel’s office. He serves on national and state boards, including Fruanhofer USA, National Association of Seed and Venture Funds, Maryland Venture Authority, the Technology Council of Maryland, Maryland Space Business Roundtable and is past President of the Association of University Research Parks.He has served on the staff for the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Health Care Financing Administration Office of Attorney-Advisor, and the Maryland General Assembly. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore.

Sara Nayeem, M.D. is a Principal with New Enterprise Associates, a diversified venture capital firm with $13B in committed capital. Sara joined NEA’s healthcare team in January 2009 and focuses on investments in biopharmaceutical companies. She serves on the boards of Mersana and Cydan and as a board observer for Epizyme, Omthera and Zyngenia. She has also been involved in NEA’s investments in Tesaro, Prosensa, and 3-V Biosciences. Prior to joining NEA, Sara was an Associate with Merrill Lynch’s Global Healthcare Group, where she advised biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies on numerous mergers, acquisitions and financing transactions. Previously, she worked as an Investment Banking Analyst at Morgan Stanley. SXSW BIOROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, March 4, 2013 – BioHealth Innovation, Inc. (BHI), a regional private-public partnership focusing on commercializing market-relevant biohealth innovations and increasing access to early-stage funding in Central Maryland, today announced that BioHealth Innovation, Inc. President & CEO Richard Bendis is scheduled to present at the upcoming SXSW 2013 conference and the 2013 BIO International Convention this Spring. Mr. Bendis is also serving on the Program Committee for AdvaMed 2013: The MedTech Conference, which will be held in Washington, DC, in September.

Specific information for each event is as follows:

  • 2013 South By Southwest “SXSW” Conference, March 8-12, 2013, Austin Convention Center, Austin, Texas. Mr. Bendis is participating in a panel on Saturday, March 9, entitled, “Entrepreneurs-in-Residence: Not Just for VCs!” Venture capital firms have utilized the services of ‘Entrepreneurs-in-Residence’ (EIRs), seasoned innovators with functional expertise, to help spur entrepreneurship and fill gaps in expertise. This panel will look at the value of combining the ‘innovation mojo’ of EIRs with some of the government’s brightest ‘intrapreneurs’ to solve the nation’s most pressing challenges. Joining Mr. Bendis on the panel will be Arnaub Chatterjee (Associate Director of Health Information Partnerships, Merck – Office of the Chief Medical Information and Innovation Officer), John Paul Farmer (Senior Advisor to the U.S. CTO) and Zachery Jiwa, Health IT Advisor; Innovation Fellow, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Advisor, HIMSS State Advisory Roundtable.
  • 2013 BIO International Convention, April 22-23, 2013, McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Bendis is scheduled to be part of The Translational Research Forum on April 22, 2013, beginning at 1:30 p.m., and a panel discussion focused on effective strategies in developing accelerator models beginning at 4:35 p.m.

  • AdvaMed 2013: The MedTech Conference, September 23-25, 2013, Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, DC. Mr. Bendis is reviewing panel submissions in the eHealth IT Track.

On a recent business trip to China, I was automatically assumed to be an interpreter or assistant because I was helping with communication on both sides. I had to assert myself and remind my colleagues that I, too, had original thoughts to contribute. This small example shines light on the issue of how Asian women are often perceived. We are seen as competent and hard-working, partly due to stereotypes, but not necessarily powerful or influential. In fact, projecting an image of power can invoke some resentment and cause discomfort. A man I once supervised admitted to me that he was not used to having a woman as manager. At least he was honest, which made it easier to work out the problem.
