BioHealth Innovation Inc., a nonprofit that seeks to commercialize technology in the biotech and healthcare fields, could open an accelerator for health information technology startups this year.

Co-located in Rockville and in Baltimore, BioHealth wants the accelerator to serve entrepreneurs and small businesses in central Maryland. Upon board approval, the organization plans to identify a location by the first quarter of this year and have it operational by the fourth quarter.  

“We are evaluating it. We believe there is a need for one. We know there is interest,” BioHealth President and CEO Richard Bendis says. 

New Enterprise Associates raised the most money of any venture capital firm in 2012.

New Enterprise, headquartered in Chevy Chase and has a Timonium office, raised $2.6 billion last year. That topped the 182 venture capital firms that raised a total of $20.6 billion in 2012, according to Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association. That dollar figure was up 10 percent from 2011.

Meanwhile, Chevy Chase’s Global Environment Fund also made the list, raising $18.9 million in 2012.

BHI and Ahead are collaborating to accelerate commercialization of Symcat, Ahead Research’s patient/healthcare provider matchmaking app

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, Dec. 19, 2012 – BioHealth Innovation, Inc. (BHI) announced today that its newest client, Ahead Research, Inc. (Ahead), received the first Cigna Innovation Health Challenge award at the 2012 mHealth summit. BHI and Ahead recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly accelerate the commercialization of Symcat, Ahead’s web and mobile application whose module was the basis for the Cigna award.

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, Dec. 19, 2012 – BioHealth Innovation, Inc. (BHI), a regional private-public partnership focusing on commercializing market-relevant biohealth innovations and increasing access to early-stage funding in Central Maryland, announced today the appointment of Emergent BioSolutions Inc. President and CEO Daniel J. Abdun-Nabi and SR One President Jens Eckstein, Ph.D., to the BHI Board of Directors.
